Scripture speaks both of the MILK of the word as well as the MEAT of the word.

1 Pet. 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere MILK of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

When a person is first saved, they are a spiritual baby and understand very little of the Bible. At this time they can only understand the milk of the word (the very simple and plain teachings of scripture). But as a believer grows in their knowledge and understanding of scripture, they will then become more spiritually mature. It is only after drinking much of the milk of the word that a believer will then have the spiritual maturity to understand the more difficult teachings of scripture which the Bible refers to as meat.

But sadly, many believers do not read and study the scriptures as they should, and even after being a Christian for many years, are still spiritual babes in their understanding of the scriptures. They cannot eat (understand) meat (the deeper truths of scripture).

1 Cor. 3:2 I have fed you with MILK, and not with MEAT: for hitherto ye were NOT ABLE to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

It you try to give a baby a pork chop, they cannot eat it because they are too immature. The same is true of the meat of the word. Unless a believer has grown and matured in their understanding of scripture, they will not be able to understand the deeper truths of scripture.

Hebrews 5:12-13 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of MILK, and not of strong MEAT. For every one that useth MILK is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

The word "MILK", in its context here, is a reference to the first principles (basic doctrines) of the Christian faith (doctrines regarding: repentance, faith, baptisms, the resurrection, etc. - see Heb. 6:1-2). The word "MEAT", in its context here, is a reference to the deeper symbolisms of scripture (the Old Covenant types and shadows which are now fulfilled under the New Covenant by Christ). This is the subject matter which is being transitioned to and which makes up much of the rest of the book of Hebrews (Jesus fulfills the types and shadows of the animal sacrifces, the high priest, Melchisedec, etc. etc.).

Based upon what we have learned from scripture, we can now give the following definitions.

SPIRITUAL MILK - The simple and clear teachings of scripture.

SPIRITUAL MEAT - The deeper symbolisms of scripture.

The sad thing is our day is that many are being taught that all of scripture must be interpreted “literally” and never symbolically. Whosoever falls for such a false teaching is bound to spend the rest of their Christian life as a baby, for they have been deceived into believing that there is no MEAT of the word. Sad.
