The New Age Movement
began to take shape in United States in the 1970s. The teachings of this
movement are basically the teachings of Hinduism repackaged for an American
audience. Here are just some of the reasons why I am not a NOT a part of the
New Age Movement (NAM).
1. Their UnBiblical
View of God.
The NAM teaches both
Monism and Pantheism. Monism is the belief that God is a source of divine
energy which permeates the universe. Pantheism is the belief that God is all
and all is God. Pantheists will often speak of “mother earth” or “mother
nature” because they believe the earth and universe are part of God.
What does the Bible say?
Scripture teaches
that God is a personal being which is above, beyond, and separate from His
creation.
Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I
AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto
the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Jeremiah 10:10 But the LORD is the
true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king:
at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to
abide his indignation.
Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in
the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit,
to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite
ones.
Genesis 1:1 In the
beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Scripture refers to
God with personal pronouns such as “I” and “he”. This means that God is a
personal being rather than an impersonal energy force or divine mind. Notice
that the last verse says that God created the heaven and the earth, not
that God was the heaven and the earth. As I stated earlier, the God of
the Bible is above, beyond, and separate from His creation.
2. Their UnBiblical
View of Christ.
The NAM teaches that
Jesus was indeed an historical figure, but that “Christ” was simply a higher
level of consciousness which Jesus ascended to by taping in the divine energy.
They teach that this same potential lies within everyone, and that anyone can
achieve Christ consciousness just as Jesus did.
What does the Bible say?
The Bible teaches us
that Jesus Christ is unique. Being both Divine (God) and man, He is the ONLY
begotten son of God.
John 1:1 In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh,
and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the
only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
The word “Christ” means
“anointed one” and refers to Jesus being the Messiah/Christ who was promised in
the Old Testament.
Psalms 2:2 The kings of the earth
set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against
his anointed, saying,
Acts 4:26 The kings of the earth
stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against
his Christ.
The passage in Acts
is restating God’s promise from Psalm 2. Jesus is the fulfillment of this
anointed one. He is the Messiah, the one and only Christ.
John 4:25-26 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias
cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all
things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto
thee am he.
The NAM also teaches
that there will be a future coming world leader/avatar/Christ who will herald and usher in the dawning of a New Age.
Scripture warns about this deception and tells us not to believe it (Matt.
24:24, etc.).
3. Their UnBiblical
View that All Religions Lead to God.
The NAM teaches that
all of the worlds religions
are just different paths which lead to God and that a person can get to God
through any of them.
What does the Bible say?
The Bible says that
Jesus Christ is the only way to God in salvation.
John 14:6 Jesus saith
unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto
the Father, but by me.
Acts 4:12 Neither
is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven
given among men, whereby we must be saved.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one
God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
The Bible tells us
that all other "paths" created by men only lead to death and
destruction.
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way
which seemeth right unto a man, but the end
thereof are the ways of death.
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the
strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the
way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be
that find it.
4. Their UnBiblical
View Regarding Death and Beyond.
The NAM teaches
reincarnation, that people live their lives over and over again.
What does the Bible say?
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed
unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Scripture says that
people only die once, and after they die they will be judged. This makes
reincarnation impossible. The Bible teaches us that when a person dies that is
the end. At death people either go to heaven if they are saved or hell if they
are not.
For unbelievers...
Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye
generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Luke 16:23-24 And
in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments ... And he cried and said
... I am tormented in this flame...
For believers ...
1 Peter 1:4 To an inheritance
incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not
away, reserved in heaven for you,
Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say
unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the
body, and to be present with the Lord.
5. Their UnBiblical
View of Sin and Salvation.
The NAM does not
speak of sin or salvation in the sense in which scripture does. When they speak
of sin at all, it is in the sense of missing out on one’s potential. I guess
that would make salvation reaching one’s potential.
What does the Bible say?
Scripture teaches
that all have sinned against a Holy God and that the just punishment for this
sin is separation from God for all eternity in a place the Bible calls the lake
of fire.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned,
and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:10 As it is written,
There is none righteous, no, not one:
Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not
found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
The Bible teaches
that people must repent of their sins and place their faith/trust in Jesus
Christ’s one-time sacrifice upon the cross for sins.
Acts 17:30 ... God ... now commandeth
all men every where to repent:
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and
be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing
shall come from the presence of the Lord;
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto
you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins
according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the
third day according to the scriptures:
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved
through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not
of works, lest any man should boast.
John 3:15 That whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we
are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for
all.
The call to believe
on Jesus Christ for salvation is not only a call to believe on Him as savior
but also a call to surrender to Him as Lord. Jesus is both savior and Lord.
Those who will not surrender to Him as Lord cannot have His as savior either.
Luke 6:46 And why call ye me,
Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will
of my Father which is in heaven.
A person is not
saved by surrendering to Christ as Lord, but by faith. But those who truly
believe Jesus is Lord will also surrender to Him as Lord. It is a fruit of true
saving faith.
