There is a heretical teaching today known as “Oneness” or modalism. This teaching isn’t new, but is the resurrection of an old heresy invented by a man named Sabellius in the third century. Modalism rejects the Biblical doctrine of the Trinity and in its place teaches that there is one God who reveals himself in three ways (or modes): sometimes as the Father, sometimes as the Son, and sometimes as the Holy Spirit - but that He is never all three at the same time. This heretical teaching is common within Pentecostalism and its adherents are often referred to as “Oneness Pentecostals”. Some Apostolic Churches and others affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church (UPC) hold to this belief.
What does the Bible say about these things?
1 John 5:7 For there ARE three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three ARE one.
Notice that this verse says "are" (present tense). This means that the Father (God the father), the Word (The Son Jesus Christ which was made flesh - John 1:14), and the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) are ALL THREE in existence AT THE SAME TIME. In doctrinal terms it means that they are each "co-existent" and "co-eternal". This flies in the face of the false heretical teaching of oneness that God is sometimes the father, sometimes the son, and at other times the Holy Spirit. NO! According to scripture, He is all three at once.
Matthew 3:16-17 And JESUS, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw THE SPIRIT OF GOD descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo A VOICE FROM HEAVEN, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
We see from the verse above that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are each distinct. That is, the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Spirit, etc. For example: in the verse above, who was it that was baptized? It was the Son [Jesus], not the Father, nor the Holy Spirit. Who was it that descended? It was the Holy Spirit, not the Father nor the Son. Who was it that spoke? It was the Father, not the Son, nor the Holy Spirit. We see then that each of the three persons are distinct.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, THE HOLY GHOST shall come upon thee, and the power of THE HIGHEST shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called THE SON OF GOD.
Here again we see that each of the three is distinct. Think about it. Jesus prayed to God the Father repeatedly while He was on earth. Who was He praying to, Himself???
Why is all of this so important? The Bible teaches us that there is only ONE true God and that we must believe in HIM or we cannot be saved.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee THE ONLY TRUE GOD...
Isaiah 45:21 ...there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
There is only ONE TRUE GOD and He is the ONLY SAVIOR. We cannot have eternal life unless we know Him. We cannot be saved by believing in a God that is different than the God of Scripture. This is why this matter is of the utmost importance.
The Bible warns us not to be deceived by believing in a false God, a false Jesus, or a false Holy Spirit.
Deuteronomy 11:16 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart BE NOT DECEIVED, and ye turn aside, and serve OTHER GODS, and worship them;
2 Corinthians 11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth ANOTHER JESUS, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive ANOTHER SPIRIT, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
When people teach that “there is one God and that His name is Jesus” as Modalists do, they are saying that Jesus is the father, Jesus is the son, and Jesus is the Holy Spirit. That is heretical! That is NOT the true God. That is NOT the true Jesus. And that is NOT the true Holy Spirit. This passage then goes on to tell us the following about these people who teach another Jesus and/or another Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
13 For such are FALSE APOSTLES, DECEITFUL WORKERS, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14 And no marvel; for SATAN himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if HIS MINISTERS also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
The Bible calls these people SATAN’S MINISTERS. They are not serving God. They are serving the devil.
According to the Bible these three, the father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are ALL THREE ONE AT THE SAME TIME. This is the ONE true God! We cannot be saved by believing in any other.
1 John 5:7 For there ARE three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and THESE THREE ARE ONE.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee THE ONLY TRUE GOD ...
2 John 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST, hath not God. He that abideth in THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST, he hath both the Father and the Son.
According to the above verse, we must believe the correct doctrine about Jesus Christ (Modalists do not) or we do not have God (are not saved).
