There are a number of symbolic types and shadows in
the Old Testament. These types and shadows represented certain spiritual
realities which are now said to be fulfilled in the New Testament.
Matthew 5:17 Think
not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to
destroy, but to fulfil.
Galatians 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these
are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth
to bondage, which is Agar.
Colossians 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come;
but the body is of Christ.
Hebrews 10:1 For
the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image
of the things...
Here are a few examples:
1. Animal sacrifices under the Old Covenant (O.C.) were
fulfilled by Christ’s one-time sacrifice under the New Covenant (N.C.).
John 1:29 The
next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the
sin of the world.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things,
as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your
fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish
and without spot:
Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath
loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to
God for a sweetsmelling savour.
Hebrews 10:10, 14 By the which will we are sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. For by one offering he hath
perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
2. Christ fulfilled the symbolism of the O.C. high priest. He is
now our N.C. high priest.
Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we
have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son
of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Hebrews 8:1 Now
of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high
priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
heavens;
3. The rest of the Levitical priesthood under the O.C.
symbolized and is fulfilled by N.C. believers who are now spiritual priests.
1 Peter 2:5 Ye
also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood,
to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen
generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that
ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous
light:
4. The symbolism of the O.C. temple is now fulfilled in the
church (believers), God's N.C. temple.
2 Corinthians 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with
idols? for ye are the temple of the living God;
as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their
God, and they shall be my people.
Ephesians 2:19-22 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of
God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all
the building fitly framed together groweth unto an
holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded
together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
5. The symbolism of O.C. circumcision is now fulfilled by the
N.C. spiritual circumcision (regeneration).
Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the
circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the
flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which
worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence
in the flesh.
Galatians 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth
any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
6. The symbolism of being a Jew under the O.C. is now fulfilled
by being a Jew spiritually under the N.C..
Romans 2:28-29 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is
that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew,
which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of
the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men,
but of God.
Romans 9:6-8 Not as though the word of God hath taken
none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are
they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are
not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the
seed.
Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which
worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence
in the flesh.
(Keep in mind that Philippians was written to a
gentile church, and the term "the circumcision" is another name for
Jews - Gal. 2:7).
7. The symbolism of Jerusalem under the O.C. is now fulfilled by
new, heavenly Jerusalem, the church, the bride of Christ under the N.C..
Hebrews 12:22-24 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the
heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the
general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven,
and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And
to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of
sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that
of Abel.
Galatians 4:24-26 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants;
the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth
to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem
which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Under the O.C. Jerusalem was earthly,
but under the N.C. Jerusalem is heavenly.
Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new
Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride
adorned for her husband.
Revelation 21:9-10 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials
full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I
will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. And he
carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me
that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Unless a believer rightly understands these things,
they have no hope of being able to understand Biblical prophecy. This is
especially true of the book of Revelation which is filled with the use of these
same symbols, along with many others.
